What future awaits the former head of Society for Peace Movement?

23/12/2023

The former head of the Movement of Society for Peace, Abderrazak Makri, has intensified his criticism of the general line drawn by the Algerian state’s policy for many decades regarding the most vital issues for the country, especially with regard to the Palestinian cause.

The opposition Movement of Society for Peace is considered one of the most prominent political forces with an Islamic reference in Algeria. It was founded imitating the Association of Algerian Muslim ʿUlamaʾ in Algeria – a Muslim Brotherhood advocacy entity – and constitutes the second largest parliamentary bloc within the Algerian parliament. The relationship between the regime and the movement has been stable since the era of the former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, especially since the movement became acquainted with the regime’s stance in supporting the Palestinian cause and resistance movements for national liberation.
