Potential political paths in Libya 2024

10/01/2024

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya postponed the preparatory meeting for representatives of the five main institutional parties in Libya to January 2024, amid differences between local authorities regarding the meeting proposed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Abdoulaye Bathily, to discuss the next steps to carry out the elections, as the year 2023 ended without any tangible progress towards this pivotal aim, which opens the door to several expectations regarding the possible paths of the political process during the year 2024.

It could be stated that there are three trends being pushed to be adopted by internal and external actors affecting the Libyan crisis, and that is through expanding participation in the political process set by the United Nations, renegotiating the formation of the executive authority, in addition to replacing the political class through elections.
