Pakistan’s political dilemma, which Islamabad believes will be resolved with elections, has resulted in security concerns throughout its borders, casting a shadow over the country’s complicated internal situation. Mainly, there are two major risks to Islamabad’s internal stability and border security: first, risks that emerge from non-state actors, such as terrorist groups; and second, the usual geopolitical threats from rival powers.
Issues related to national security are likely to constitute an important issue in the current Pakistani elections, as the escalating rate of terrorist attacks and the lack of security in some border areas, as well as the tense relations with some of Pakistan’s neighboring countries, will affect, in one way or another, the voting behavior of the Pakistani voter, especially in light of the two terrorist attacks that occurred one day before the Pakistani general elections.
