How will Ethiopia and Somalia react to the proposed Ugandan mediation?

26/02/2024

General Jeje Odongo, Ugandan Minister for Foreign Affairs, has confirmed that his country is currently considering suitable paths that would bring together both Somalia and Ethiopia in order to find a peaceful solution to the growing tensions between the two countries brought on by Ethiopia’s insistence on carrying out the memorandum of understanding signed in January, which stipulates that Ethiopia will obtain a sea port in exchange for recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state, and 20% of the shares of Ethiopian Airlines.

The political weight that Uganda has on the African continent, particularly in light of its active diplomatic role under IGAD and its hosting of numerous conferences to settle issues and disputes raised between African countries, which have contributed to national reconciliation within Somalia, will be a major factor in determining whether or not it proposes an initiative to play a mediation role between Somalia and Ethiopia.
