2024 Turkish local elections: A sign of potential change

18/03/2024

Turkish political parties are currently adopting a number of measures in preparation for the local elections scheduled for 31 March 2024, where approximately 64 million voters will cast their votes to elect the mayors of 81 municipalities. Local elections are of great importance in Turkey, as parties seek to win the largest possible number of seats, especially in large municipalities, as they are the key to winning the presidential elections.

The results of recent opinion polls regarding the local elections indicate that the results in the major municipalities may remain unknown in advance due to the intense competition between Murat Kurum and Ekrem Imamoglu. Moreover, the Justice and Development Party alliance is likely to achieve positive results in the upcoming local elections, especially since the alliance chances are increasing at the expense of the opposition parties, especially the Republican People’s Party.
