On March 31, Turkey held local elections where about 48 million voters cast their votes to elect the mayors of 81 provinces. The results announced by the Supreme Elections Authority indicated that the Republican People’s Party (CHP) achieved a historic victory over Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party.
The Republican People’s Party achieved victory by capturing 17,391 million votes (37.76%), which enabled it to achieve major successes in 35 provinces and retain the major provinces, such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, in addition to Antalya and Bursa.
