Following the appointment of Tunisian diplomat “Tarek Ben Salem” as the new Secretary-General of the Arab Maghreb Union on May 27 for a three-year term starting June 2024 from the Secretariat’s offices in Morocco, the possibility of reviving the Arab Maghreb Union was once again analyzed.
The appointment of Tarek Ben Salem may lead to the revitalization of the Arab Maghreb Union in light of his awareness of the surrounding challenges and his experience in working in several countries, such as Russia, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This coincides with the various arguments about revitalizing the union’s structures, resuming the holding of Maghreb summits, and reviewing its founding agreement, which came as a response to the decline in the union’s effectiveness over the past two decades.
