Head's Statement:

How does the National Center for Middle East Studies keep pace with global changes?

The world is currently awash with a number of rapid developments that raise questions about the changing balance of power between regional and international actors and, consequently, the structure of the global system.

These developments affect various political, economic, social, cultural, environmental and health aspects, accompanied by waves of conflict and competition over power and areas of control, as well as forms of cooperation based on the notion of mutual dependence necessitated by national interests.

Today, we are witnessing the crystallization of a new world order whose features and patterns of relations have not yet been settled. The unipolar moment, which refers to the period that the United States dominated the global power structure as described by the American writer Charles Krauthammer, no longer exists amid the rise of the so-called middle powers, like Russia, China, India, and others, in order to play a role parallel to the American one.

This process of restructuring the global system has faced many challenges, including the Corona pandemic, climate and environmental changes, the global economic and financial crises, the Russian-Ukrainian/Western conflict, all the way to the Israeli aggression on Gaza. These challenges have reinforced various threats to global, regional and national stability, and, hence, required instant steps and actions to anticipate them, according to credible scientific insights.

The most prominent questions in light of these challenges are: Where does the Middle East stand in these rapid transformations? Can the Middle East witness a transition towards a new form of interactions and relations in light of these transformations or not?

Such questions, and many others, have imposed on our center – the National Center for Middle East Studies – as an “independent think tank”, the necessity of engaging with these challenges through objective study and accurate analysis, to provide the decision-maker, the reader, and experts with abundance of scientific knowledge that may contribute to dispelling the clouds of “uncertainty” that prevail in the world.

The interest in the technological structure came as one of the main dimensions of the development efforts affecting the center now, whether concerning the institutional structure or research production, in order to keep up with the accelerated developments, whether related to research thought or global interactions between countries and each other and between them and other non-state actors.

Here we announce, with great pride, the launching of the website of our center – the National Center for Middle East Studies – in a new guise, making it a revealing and expressive platform for the identity of the center as a distinct research entity concerned with internal, regional and global issues, in an intertwined manner, reflecting the interrelation between those issues and their repercussions at various levels.

The website in its new form will be able to attract many researchers and students of political science, law, social sciences, and culture, as they will find accessible alternatives, expected scenarios, and objective explanations for the phenomena surrounding our rapidly developing and changing world.

The website provides an in-depth and up-to-date analysis of internal, regional and global developments and interactions, through a number of the Center’s publications in which a group of senior experts, researchers, and specialists participate, such as Middle East Papers, Political Pamphlets, Civil Society Bulletin, Global Opinion Polls Bulletin, Flash Analysis, and Opinion Articles, and other sources of in-depth research knowledge that reflect a historical legacy of the center’s scientific competence since its foundation in 1989 in conjunction with modernization surges towards the future.

The reasoning of our center – the National Center for Middle East Studies – in dealing with issues is based on rationality in analysis, objectivity, and the optimal use of scientific methods and methodologies, along with demonstrating their eligibility to explain phenomena, leading to predicting their paths and anticipating mechanisms for dealing with them, which enhances the center’s credibility and accumulates its role as an entity. The website represents the language of the era, which the Center now possesses its tools, and the fastest mean for communicating with an audience of researchers, as well as transferring knowledge to the largest possible scope of readers, in the shortest time and with the highest possible efficiency.

The generous reader and follower of the center’s development process during the coming period, and through the website, will glimpse a high level of dedication to work, and an increasing persistence in exploring the depths of intertwined issues that have a direct impact on the Middle East region on the one hand, and on Egypt on the other hand, in a sustained attempt to answer a scientific question that still baffles thinkers and theorists: what rules the world…is it force or law? It has become necessary to ascertain the answer in light of successive conflict issues, escalating hotbeds of tension, and prominent models of cooperation, which may reflect a pragmatic rationale.

We invite the honorable reader to engage intellectually with the arguments of our researchers, especially with regard to the viability of theories explaining the interactions of international relations, which range between idealism, realism, liberalism, and neoliberalism, in order to link them with the developments related to the issues of security, economics, migration, refugees, environment, information revolution, and artificial intelligence, besides their effects on decision-making, states’ interests, and the fate of conflicts and wars.

It is an utmost responsibility that we have assumed in sustaining the transfer of objective knowledge to everyone who desires, urging intellectual debates that allow for building mental capacities and acquiring analytical skills, as well as providing cadres capable of a deeper understanding of the world around us. Monitoring the changes and moments of transition in the world and the radical turning points of transformation, reflects the center’s message on the one hand, and expresses its vision to be the most prominent, most capable of analysis, and the most reliable in proposing and presenting alternatives, on the other hand.

The website will represent a bridge of communication between our center – the National Center for Middle East Studies – and every aspirant of knowledge, seeking understanding and interested in the public line. Moreover, the website will provide the needed spot on issues and phenomena that raise scientific and practical concerns, and have repercussions on the relations and policies of countries in various fields.

As we begin a new page in the record of the development of our center – the National Center for Middle East Studies – we hope that success will be our ally, objectivity and science will be our path, in order to fulfill the mission of enlightenment and understanding of developments domestically, regionally, and globally, and to represent an important foundation in the edifice of science, thought, and knowledge.
