Iranian elections and the three dilemmas

Iranians will select 290 members of the Islamic Shura Council (Parliament) from a pool of some 15,000 candidates, and they will also elect members of the “Assembly of Experts.” This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the political history of the nation.

The Iranian elections are being held in light of complex internal contexts, as the upcoming parliamentary elections and the elections for the Assembly of Experts are the first general elections to be held after the demonstrations that followed the death of Mahsa Amini. In 2022, the protests have grown to include the majority of the nation, including Tehran. During that time, the demands for justice for Mahsa Amini have evolved into calls for the overthrow of “clerical rule” in the nation.
