Germany and the Sudanese crisis

30/01/2024

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock embarked on a tour of East Africa that included South Sudan, Kenya, and Djibouti from January 24 to 26, which reflects the German interest in the political and security developments in the East African and Horn of Africa regions, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The prolonged armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since last April has aroused German interest, as it expressed its concern about the intensity of military confrontations between the two parties following the outbreak of the conflict between them at its beginning. Germany then called on the Sudanese parties for calm and a political settlement, and also announced that it would consider all available options to deal with this conflict, including sending three transport planes to evacuate 150 German citizens from Sudan.
