Implications of the withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali from ECOWAS

07/02/2024

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso issued a joint statement in which they decided to immediately withdraw from membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The collective decision of the three countries came in light of the intensification of the geopolitical conflict in the Sahel and Sahara regions.

This decision reflected the desire of the three countries to assert their sovereignty against attempts at external interference in their internal affairs, to form cohesive internal fronts that support the new political systems, and to consolidate their legitimacy in a way that guarantees the stability of the three systems, which was reflected in the domestic support in the three countries for the decision to withdraw from ECOWAS.
