The United States and China… Technological Competition in the Semiconductor Sector

13/11/2024

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has decided to suspend the production of advanced chips dedicated to artificial intelligence for Chinese companies, coinciding with the return of “Donald Trump” to the presidency, whose policy since his first term has been characterized by competition with China, which raises expectations of the possibility of increasing monopoly of advanced technology industries in the coming period, and the adoption of policies that would restrict access to this technology to many countries.

China views previous US controls and restrictions as an incentive to push Chinese companies to carry out local innovations in this sector, in addition to pushing them to increase their investments in the field of research and development to enhance their capabilities for technological innovation, as evidenced by its establishment of three funds to stimulate the semiconductor sector since 2019, with a total value of about $ 115.5 billion.
