Turkish-Greek relations: Mending ties

As part of Turkey’s endeavor to play more effective role in the international system, Ankara aimed at reforming its relationship with Greece, as President Erdogan visited Greece on December 7, 2023 – his first official visit to Athens since 2017 – which was accompanied by signing the Joint Declaration between the two countries. However, the recent period has witnessed a number of conflicting developments in the course of Turkish-Greek relations.

The Turkish-Greek relationship has recently developed uncertainly. Although it has been characterized by cooperation and the desire to overcome the chronic differences between both two countries, there are some tensions between them in conjunction with these positive indicators, which may hinder the path of promoting relations between Ankara and Athens.
