International frameworks to manage migration flows between Africa and Europe

15/09/2024

Migration and the management of its flows has maintained an important position on the political agenda of European countries, despite the security risks resulting from many political and security disturbances and developments around the world, which have not succeeded in changing trends and removing the issue of migration from the top of the political agenda of European countries, despite the continuing disagreements over sharing the burdens resulting from migrant flows and the continued rise in asylum rates to the European continent.

Several countries have recently put forward tripartite plans to manage migration flows between source countries, transit countries, and receiving countries, in a renewed attempt to address the flows resulting from political unrest in the countries of the South and the inability of European countries to agree on burden-sharing. The “Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum” held in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on 17 July 2024, with the participation of 28 African and European countries, through heads of government, diplomatic representatives, ambassadors to Libya, and representatives of international organizations concerned with the issue of irregular migration, represented the latest event aimed at strengthening tripartite plans to manage migration.
