A Turkish Perspective on the US Presidential Elections

21/08/2024

Countries’ stances toward the candidates for the US presidential elections differ in light of their understanding of the implications of the election results for US relations with other countries across the world. The results will influence the formation of global policy based on each candidate’s visions and stances on international issues, which will apply to the rest of the regional issues, such as the Palestinian cause or the US presence in Syria, as well as support for the People’s Protection Units, which are issues that have occupied a high priority in Turkish policy, the country that maintained a balanced stance toward the candidates from the beginning.

The Palestinian cause is one of the most critical issues that may affect relations between the two countries following the US elections, particularly given Turkey’s efforts to act as a mediator and advocate for a two-state solution. If Trump wins, Turkish-American ties are likely to become more complicated, especially given Trump’s statements backing Israel, which have heightened Middle Eastern tensions. Despite current US backing for Israel, Trump’s stance is more rigorous, as indicated by his claim that Biden is a “friend of Palestine” and is hindering Israel from completing its goal against Hamas.
