China’s presence in the Maghreb region carried a number of indicators about its strategic priorities during the coming period, in light of what the transformations in the international arena dictate with the approaching inauguration of the new US President, “Donald Trump”, who may adopt broader protectionist policies against China, which necessarily pushes it to search for alternative outlets in the face of potential commercial and security challenges facing its strategy.
It is expected that Chinese relations with the Maghreb countries will witness successive developments at various military and civilian levels in an attempt to outperform other competitors while raising the importance of the Belt and Road Initiative as a global development strategy, and Morocco in particular may constitute a new attractive destination for Chinese direct investment.
