Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian is set to take the constitutional oath on July 30 before the Islamic Shura Council (Parliament). The new president announced some of the features of his foreign policy during his election campaign. As President Pezeshkian called during his campaign to build “constructive relations” with the United States and European countries in order to bring Iran out of its isolation, Pezeshkian also promised to reduce international tensions and restore active diplomacy and constructive engagement with the world.
Pezeshkian’s approach, which tends towards openness in foreign policy, raised questions about the powers of the President of the Republic in making foreign policy compared to the Supreme Leader of Iran. This also raises questions about the challenges that he may face, particularly given the existence of conservative-controlled constitutional institutions and an unfavorable foreign and regional environment.
